The organistaion that I am working with at present want to undertake a sponsered walk/cycle ride/run to raise money for the Tsunami appeal. The 7 mile route will go between the two sites and is mainly on minor residential roadways with footpaths and some along a canal tow path.
Does anyone have any experence, comments or model risk assessments that they could share regarding such an event. I am walking the route with one of the organissers prior to the event and anticipate things like first aid cover, road crossings, weather, other road/path users etc.
Many thanks, look forward to hearing from you.

Hi,
Have you looked at HSG192 'Charity & Voluntary Workers - a guide to health and safety at work'? This contains much common-sense guidance about this kind of thing.
As a Charity we employ around 50 fundraisers and have one event of another most weekends. We do try and ensure that events using public access routes such as towpaths or roads are marshalled, and that steps are taken to protect especially vulnerable participants (such as children or disabled people). In addition we try and ensure first aid provision, and maybe a sag wagon to pick up stragglers.
I also belong to Audax UK, which is a long-distance cycling club. Audax members organise rides (not for fundraising, just for 'fun') throughout the year, and over the last year, under pressure from the insurers, now have to produce RAs for all the rides. These take the view that the rider is responsible for the condition of the machine and their own fitness, and requires them to sign a declaration to this effect. The joining form for the rides now also has a statement that the ride is on public roads and the rider is resposnible for their capacity to ride safely on public roads.
Hope this is all of some help,
John
