Posted By Chris B I work at a large (c. 40 acre) manufacturing site with both commercial and industrial buildings. We employ indentured electricians with (what was) City & Guilds "B&C" Certificates, along with the current City & Guilds Pt.2&3 Certificates for electrical installation etc. We also have Electrical Engineering Technicians, and Chartered Electrical Engineers on site. We are constantly installing new, modifying existing and removing redundant circuits to both manufacturing plant and building services. We use the IEE Forms 1 to 6 to document changes etc. None of our employees are NICEIC registered. What to we need to do (if anything)to comply with Part P of the Building Regs.

Posted By Jason Touraine I may be wrong but I thought Part P was about 'dwellings'

Posted By Frank Cooper Jason is quite right. The requirement, ‘Requirement P', has been limited to fixed electrical installations in dwellings. If your only concern is industrial buildings then Part P does not affect you. Frank Cooper

Posted By Chris B Thanks all. A fairly unanimous opinion. Can't see where it clarifies for domestic / dwellings only. Or maybe I can't see the wood for the trees. Any offers?

Posted By Stuart Nagle Chris. The following is from Part 'P' PART P ELECTRICAL SAFETY: Design, installation, inspection and testing: P1. Reasonable provision shall be made in the design, installation, inspection and testing of electrical installations in order to protect persons from fire or injury. Provision of information: P2. Sufficient information shall be provided so that persons wishing to operate, maintain or alter an electrical installation can do so with reasonable safety. The requirements of this Part apply only to electrical installations that are intended to operate at low or extra-low voltage and are: (a) in a dwelling; (b) in the common parts of a building serving one or more dwellings, but excluding power supplies to lifts; (c) in a building that receives its electricity from a source located within or shared with a dwelling; and (d) in a garden or in or on land associated with a building where the electricity is from a source located within or shared with a dwelling. Therefore, Part 'P' only applies to dwellings or if a building has mixed use (e.g. dwellings and other uses) the dwellings and any common/shared areas of such buildings. See Page 5 (Requirements) - Limits on Application. Regards... Stuart

Posted By David Clarkson You refer to modifying services installations within your buildings. If the services projects have an impact on the buildings structural elements then the Building Regs (application for warrant) apply. Otherwise Part P relates to general hazards eg safe cleaning of windows, glazing safety. Generally the process is ; design/warrant application/warrant issue/tender process or in house/works on site. CDM Regs may apply.
