Does anyone have any experience in using outdoor weather shelters? Basically, my company is considering using tents in rainy conditions for external work.
I'm thinking that they need to be open faced to avoid being confined spaces. However, I'm, finding difficulty in locating any references to the hazards of using this type of item (my experience is in using containment tents which are definitely treated as confined spaces) and also of manufacturers of this type of product.
Thanks in advance for any comments.

Hi Rachel,
Whether the tent will create a confined space will depend on what your workforce intend to do inside the tent.
They are extensively used by utilities e.g. electrical supply industry, telecoms.
Some years ago I was involved as expert witness for plaintiff suing an electricity supply company and others after Heras fence collapsed onto his head.
At the 23rd hour this defender came out with the comment that it was raining and hence he should have had a tent, which would have protected him.
Went outside my office to take photos of typical tent, when BT engineer emerged with sort of "'Ere what's your game?". When I explained he collapsed into laughter and commented that the tent would collapse under the falling fencing [which is exactly what I was going to illustrate in supplementary report]. Structure deliberately lightweight to reduce manual handling risks.
Needless to say case settled at the threshhold of the Court.
Regards, Peter

Another one I've come across is tents melting when hot works are carried out inside.
Where do you intend using it as weather conditions will have an impact.
Just some thoughts...

Rachel.
Perhaps you could let us all know EXACTLY what it is your people intend to do in a tent... I can't wait...

Stuart:
I dread to think what they actually intend on doing in there!!
Seriously though: its telecommunications work: no confined space hazards but outdoors where they don't want to be getting themselves or the kit wet.
I'm mainly trying to source a decent supplier.

Rachel.
What happened to the guy who used to sell BT the jolly old red/white stripey ones?
Are these no good any more...???
Where did they get them from? has the supplier gone out of business?
