Posted By Adam Jackson Just picked up a garden roller from HSS to use at the weekend. Its basically a big plastic barrel, with a handle, that you fill with water and weighs about 67kg full. They insisted that I toolk the Safety Pack as well "for use with the roller". This pack consists of rigger gloves, goggles, EAR hearing protection and a P2 mask! For a plastic barrel which is going to be rolled around a lawn. I have e-mailed them to complain that there was no back-belt provided and no safe handling instruction given. :)

Posted By Roger the Dodger I could at an extreme push go for the gloves - but hearing protection, P2 mask and eye protection for rolling the lawn? Somebody is taking the p*** or at least your money. I guess the 'safety pack' should be read as increased profitability for HSS. I assume you were charged for the safety pack. I would have walked out of the shop.

Posted By Adam Jackson The pack was £4, but at least you can return it if its unused. However, I'm sure a lot of people won't so you are probably right - its another profit route.

Posted By fats van den raad Yep.... and on the other side of the coin, when I hired a still saw for cutting concrete from a hire company it did not come with any ppe. When I (miscieviously, I admit) asked the guy behind the counter for a recommendation as to what PPE I should wear, his answer was " I don't know anything about the machines, I just hire them out to people"!!!

Posted By Stuart Nagle I think the management of HSS have been quite cute. Many people will not have gloves (or the other garb depending on what their doing) and rather than get a pair for 50P from B&Q will open the pack and use the pair inside, what the hell!! So the HSS Hire chain have achived their stated objective of ensuring you were informed of the safety issues, provided PPE (for whatever you were doing) and made a quite fantastic profit as well. Of course you could have said, OOOiiii, HSS Manager, I'me a safety guy and I have all the necessary kit, so don;t try and flog me this safety pack.... I don't need it... I do all my jobs at home exactly as I would as work.... Yer... right!! Stuart

Posted By John Murgatroyd Gloves. Goggles. Ear ppe. Mask. 4 quid. Seems like a good deal. Just buy a load of them, and leave the roller.

Posted By colin I used to be an assiastant hire manager for a local tool hire company ( many years ago), we offered ppe in relation to the equipment being hired, such as googles and gloves etc. The ppe offered with the water barrel is extreme to say the least. No idea on the law to date but we offered ppe but never forced its sale, if the customer refused to purchase goggles, gloves etc. it would be written on the hire contract to cover the hire company in case of an incident."goggles refused" etc.
