Depending on their location and precise function they may also need to retard the spread of smoke and flames. As to things like 'should a double leaved door have both leaves unlocked', this would depend again on the number of people likely to use the door and the precise purpose for the door. All fire doors should unlock or be unlocked in the event of a fire; this doesn't have to be done automatically. Small premises often don't have fully automatic alarm systems in place, and a fire exit door in such a building could have a break glass opener, for example. Really, you need to do a fire safety risk assessment (read 'Fire Safety an Employers Guide' or look at www.firenet.org) or get somebody to do one for you. In some circumstances, for example in residential care homes or hospitals the normal guidance in 'Fire Safety' is supplemented by much stricter standards, John
