Posted By Ralph Baqar Andrew, what is your current role within the company? What sort of extension are we talking about e.g. contract size etc. I'd agree with the earlier comment that you need to be competent and this role can be both time consuming and complicated to someone who is not use to construction and health and safety e.g. You need to be able to ask all the right questions in relation to design issues, so that you are fulfilling statutory obligations. Posted By Pete Moran Andrew...compliance with CDM for a start....do not be tempted to take on too many roles internally unless you are absolutely confident that you can demonstrate to the HSE that you can carry out each role competently and not make any compromises.

Posted By Stacey R Collins It can be done. We're an office based business who saved 6 figure sums doing planning supervisors role in-house on small refurbishment work (£1m-5m budget). I suggest that at least one person in-house can undertake some specific training in CDM (over and above general H&S or specific construction safety qualifications) in order that, for the purposes of paperwork and insurance if nothing else, they can be nominated as the "competent person". But in reality we actually share responsibility for discharging the various duties under CDM around our team (consisting of a designer, architect, two project managers, myself as H&S and environment manager, a construction manager/clerk of works, a quantity surveyor and a team secretary). Only the architect, clerk of works and the QS were actually from outside our firm.
