Posted By Emma Forbes Hi everyone, Does anyone have any experience of the above? We are implementing our Waste Srategy and are building numerous waste transfer stations around the borders and wondered what sort of specific health and safety issues we need to consider... Any help/guidance is very much appreciated. Emma.

Posted By Emma Forbes Ooops, sorry, that is my bad grammar (and I'm sure I typed strategy too quickly too...), it meant to be a capital letter, it is the Scottish Borders!

Posted By Jonathan Breeze Jim, I assumed she meant without the Roman Empire in the land of the Scotti where there are brigantes and other uncivilised tribes.

Posted By Di Mason Hello Emma The HSE have a basic leaflet, Waste Industry Safety & Health, INDG 359, this should do to start you off. In addition you could try SEPA, your COTC holder or WAMITAB. Enjoy, Di

Posted By Tony Overbury Emma You may find that the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management may be able to help: www.ciwm.co.uk. You may care also to consider some of the following with regard health and safety issues relating to your transfer stations: Hazards relating to the nature of the wastes * Non hazardous/Hazardous * Paints, solvents * Cathode ray tubes, flourescent tubes * fridges etc * Food wastes, grass and other compostable wastes Traffic around the site * Access by members of the public * Vehicles removing waste containers * Equipment compacting/processing wastes Noise Odour Manual handling by staff, members of public Trips, slips and falls Not an exhaustive list but it should get you on the way. Posted By Richard Fisher TechMCIWM Good Morning Emma, There is currently a HSE consultation on Civic Amenity sites and associated risks. While this isn't directly applicable to your situation, you may well find that many of the subject headings are identical to that which would be required on a transfer station (you just don't have to worry about members of the public!). Furthermore, I shall email you a copy of the index to the H&S folder I developed for our waste management site in Swindon. This includes all transfer station risk assessments as well as treatment of fridges, end-of-life vehicles and the civic amenity site. Hope this helps. Regards Richard Fisher
