Although i think this subject was discussed some time ago I ask again if there is a legal requirement for FLTs intended for construction site use to have reversing lights. I am seeing new ones arriving on site direct from the manufacturer without these.

There is a very strong case for travel alarms, reversing lights, proximity alarms etc on FLTs as well as other mobile plant. The latest 'standard' is coming from the quarries sector and they are fitting flashing blue xenon lights to the rear of the vehicle, which flash when reverse is selected. Myt company is now taking this up for Yard operations, so long as the vehicle is not for road use (no blue lights allowed on highway except for emergency services). Having just experienced a crush and a run-over in the last few months, anything has to be an improvement in controls to minimise such risk. basically, however, driver education and training must be paramount and frequent, to maintain a bust workplace safe. There is no "legal" requirement to fit workplace transport with reversing lights as these vehicles fall under PUWER and not Vehicles(Construction & Use) Regulations. So its back to the risk assessment I am afraid! George

PUWER:
Markings and Warnings (Regulations 23 and 24)
These two regulations place duties on employers to ensure work equipment has appropriate and clearly visible health and safety markings, and that any appropriate health and safety warning or warning devices are incorporated. Such warnings must be unambiguous and easily perceived and understood.
Any use?

I have been told that lights are not required unless you intend to go road side.
Also along with blue lights i think that all back up alarms (bleep type) fitted to road going Vech are Tech. Illegal.
In the same way as sounding your horn in the wrong way/time is.
Brigade make an audible alarm that is built into reversing light that can be switched off to over come this.
But i would not think the police would do anything about the noise better to be safe
As for lights if you make your pppl use hiVis Vest to be seen should not your moving plant not be seen in the same some thing bright on them
By the way some of the Elitric trucks out there run verry quiet
