Hello
Thanks everyone for their help last time, the mad panic was for nothing as it turned out to be a mistake with our suppliers and their MSDS sheets(bless em!!). What we actually have on site is n-phenyl-2-nephylamine and not 2-naphthylame, but the MSDS does say I need to do a COSHH Special Assessment does anybody have any idea's / or worked with this chemical.

Hi Julie
Does the MSDS list its CAS number as I have not heard of this chemical?

Do you mean "N-Phenyl-2-Naphthylamine"?
CAS No: 135-88-6
If it is, and I mean IF, then it is a class 3 carcinogen and a very thorough COSHH assessment would be appropriate.
There are studies on it's effect on workers in the rubber industry at
http://oem.bmjjournals.c...gi/content/full/57/2/106
As the previous correpondent said, the CAS No. will be the best way of determining it's true identity. Many industrial chemicals have lots of non IUPAC names, although I doubt any of them are named as you describe.
Hope this helps.

I would also make sure that the CoSHH Assessment is carried out by a competent person.

Commonly known as PBN, this was in general use in the rubber industry until the 1970/80s when most of us stopped using it because of the potential beta naphthylamine (BN) impurities.
We would not use this material, as the rubber industry's experience with BN in the 1930s and 1940s is still haunting us. I still attend several inquests a year as a result of our use of this material (BN) over 55 years ago.
If you really feel you must use PBN, make sure you get specific statements from your supplier about the % BN impurities - if they can't provide this then don't use them as a supplier.
