Posted By Brian Thorp Surely the decision by Nestlé to re-design the Smarties tube is blatantly dangerous. The new hexagonal design will just bring six extra, unwanted, edges into this already dangerous world?

Posted By Gerry Knowles Don't forget the sharp edges on the end caps caused by molding and the possibility of the caps splitting and causing an additional cut hazard. Sorry slipped back into another life with Dxxxxx. Gerry

Posted By Gareth Butler But just think of the potential reduction in the number of MSD's caused by stretching for your smarties when they have rolled off the table! Is it Friday?

Posted By Stephen_S_Edwards Surely any extraneous risk brought about by the introduction of the new tubes is mitigated by the new, ergonomically acceptable design? (Wonder if they have Sudan 1 in the yellow ones?!)

Posted By Heather Aston Gareth is right - think of the positive aspects of this - the new tube will be less likely to roll along the floor and cause slips and trips. It will also be easier to grip and hopefully, to get open. More fundamentally, will there be more or less smarties inside? Heather There is no problem that cannot be solved by chocolate.

Posted By Tom Clark Two quotes from the BBC's site: The best bit about the old tube with the plastic end was always when the tube was empty. You eat the Smarties with relish (the orange ones last of course!), then put the top back on the tube, rest it on a surface, and bang the edge of your hand down hard about half way along the tube, to see how far you can fire the plastic top. That really was always one of the best bits of Smarties, and in fact in my thirties I still do it! The children of the future will miss out on a great entertaining activity. Mrs Mayo, UK The best thing about the old Smartie tube was that when you were finished with the sweets you could "karate-chop" it to fire the lid across the room at some speed. This usually resulted in me being told that it was "all fun and games until somebody loses an eye". Ah, those happy days before the dreaded Health and Safety spoiled everybody's fun! Michael, Cheltenham, UK Enjoy

Posted By Stuart Nagle I have been relaibly informed that now the new shape enables many less smarties to be poured out of the hexagonal shaped cylindrical 'container' than a tube, and therefore mums need worry less about their children getting fat(ter) as mum is now firmly in control of the volume of smarties passing into sticky little mitts..... I always liked the letters on the underside of the lid, but now I am not sure if their they are there anymore? In engineering and enviromental terms, the container should now be stronger and enable better packaging, but also contains approximately 31% (calculus is wonderful) more packaging (card and printed surface), but is, so I have discovered, comprosed of 68% recycled materials!! ......assuming this does not include the smarties themselves eh!! All very interesting stuff if you happen to live in a very small cardboard box and consist of a lot of chocolate and a sugar coating.... Stuart.....bored rigid......

Posted By Hilary Charlton But I think there is a fundamental question we have all missed here .... I mean ... why? Why are they spending vast sums of money mending something that ain't broke - what's wrong with cylindrical anyway. Do the 20p pieces still fit in it for bob-a-job week for the cubs and brownies? And more to the point - why are there never enough orange ones - surely they would be better just designing a tube purely for orange smarties so you can just buy these? Hilary

Posted By Heather Aston Hilary "Why?", because nothing is sacred in this country any more and change is always for the better isn't it ;) I had forgotten about the bob a job money collection - wasn't it the old five pence piece rather than 20s? (I am talking about the 1970s here, 20p was a lot of money!) I too used to shoot the lids off by banging the tube. I don't recall anyone ever getting hurt... Personally I like the red ones best. Heather Smarty people are happy people.....

Posted By Jonathan Breeze That's because of all the E numbers Heather. In we ever want our kids to perform for visitors we give 'em Smarties, M&M's or Skittles. Works every time!

Posted By Hilary Charlton Heather, Yes, it was 5p in the 1970's when we were doing it but with inflation my kids are doing tasks for 20p which they have to fit into a Smartie tube and the tube holds £13. I find chocolate bars and coke send the kids into orbit just as well as smarties - it's like Duracell for kids - they last up to 6 times longer! Hilary

Posted By Mark Talbot How can you like the red ones best? The orange ones have a flavour... all the rest are just [sorry, okay, not 'just'] chocolate. 5 grammes of plastic, larger than the open eye travelling at 4 ms-1 taking an eye out? I think not! Hexagonal stronger than cylindrical? Depends on tube thicknes, not just shape... how many cylinders were arriving crushed then??? Less packing space? noooo.... they will just touch each other in more places. The dimensions looked pretty similar on the BBC ... Just have them arrive by tap, at everyone's desk - that will improve attendance figures too. I like the £2 tubes in my newsagent's ... they last a full half hour!

Posted By Heather Aston Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm red ones. I think it must be the E numbers as has already been said. Are we sure it's not Friday? Heather Smarty people are happy people They smile all the time because they're feeling fine.... (sounds perfect for keeping stress away from your staff if you ask me - I like the "on tap" idea)

Posted By Rob Malcolm What! have you all gone mad, remember the old saying- 'Tell me, whats it really like in smarty land! (Cadburys trying to get inside your head). I had endless hours of fun by simply pushing out the circular cardboard section from the opposing end of the tube and waiting for one of my siblings to appear at a doorway or from behind a corner. At this point I would firmly place my lips around the hollow end of the tub and blow the plastic lid directly off into the face of either my brother of sister. The guilt I have lived with, is it any wonder I have tried to amend my past and now work as a health & Safety Officer (for all my sins) advising people day to day on good working practices. Thankyou NEBOSH and its provider North Devon College for making an honest citizen of me. Shame on Smarties for the misspent years of harrasment and abuse to my kin-folk. About time they banned em anyway! ..every letter was an opportunity for any 10 year old to think of a rude word begining in the phonetic alphabet.
