Are these trainees to fight fires?

What industry requires employees to fight fires with hose reels?

If the fire is that big - they shouldn't be in there.

The client is a service provider who themselves offer fire training.
To prove their competence they need to refresh their own training and their previous provider is no longer operating.
If hose reels are still fitted into buildings there is a requirement for persons to be trained in their use.

We have hose reels in our Head Office. I advise our staff not to use them and to leave them to the fire brigade. In our other sites they have been removed.

We have portable extinguishers which staff can use once they have been trained but I do not put any staff under pressusre to use these if there is a fire.
As the reels are at the floor exit I see three problems.

1. Users are returning to the fire with the hose against the flow of people exiting the building.

2. The hose trailing across the floor is a trip hazard.

3. The hose itself compromises the compartmentalisation as it prevents fire doors from closing fully.

Thanks for all the good advice re the potential use or not of hose reels.

This is an organisation that believes that they have a need for such training to continue their activities competently.

I only need a training provider, not a discussion on the motives of their use, so if anyone can help....

I wouldn't think it is advisable to 'have a go' at people who are trying to help....

Have you tried the fire service local to you or your client? Alternatively the Fire Service College?

You are quite right Alison, I shouldn't have a go at people and will generally apologise.

It was just that I have spent ages with them discussing this very fact and they are adamant that they need this training and frustration can creep in sometimes.

The local fire service do not offer anything like this, but will try the fire service college.

Many thanks

This training is widely given to personnel of all three armed services.

Depending on where you are it may be possible to attend one of their courses on a commercial basis.

The Navy is propbably best at this - they have had some pretty big fires, and not a fire professional to be found within 1,000 miles.

My advice;

Contact your local fire department and ask them, ours is more than helpful and cost effective (cheap). it is worth including the use of fire hoses in with extigiushers(spelling) as part of an update course. Give them a go...

I have been out of it a few years now, but back when I worked in the Offshore oil & gas business fire training was a 2 day component in the compulsory 5 day safety & survival training. We were trained to control some pretty horrendous oil fires using hosereels (amongst other fun activities). I attended 3 different centres during my time. RGIT Montrose do a range of firefighting courses, The Fleetwood Offshore Survival Centre used the Lancashire Fire Brigade training centre at Hutton, whilst the Humberside Offshore Training Association used the services of the Hull fire brigade. Any one of these should be able to help - contact details all available on the internet.

Many thanks to all for their input, I have advised my client accordingly and once again reinforced the view of 'are they really necessary'.
