Posted By John-Mark Seems like a daft question but does anyone know what the red substance is in a thermometer? JM

Posted By Heather Aston Alcohol I believe on accout of it not being as toxic as mercury if it escapes, but not freezing at such a high temperature as water. Heather

Posted By John-Mark Thanks for that. I suspected it probably was alcohol, but no-one would believe me. Other people think it could be "mineral spirits having a strong petroleum odour, eg Petroleum Hyrdocarbon, mixed with a red coloured dye." I still go with the alcohol theory. JM

Posted By Heather Aston JM Although the ones I have seen have been alcohol, it does appear that other spirits are used - presumably as long as they have a wide enough range between melting and boiling points it doesn't really matter. Google is your friend. See http://www.newton.dep.an...kasci/gen01/gen01583.htm Heather
