Posted By Mark Talbot Hi, Does anyone have a handy list of Key Performance Indicators [KPI's] that are worth their salt? Many of the ones I am thinking of could be seen as rewarding under-reporting or hiding facts [i.e. less than 2 RIDDOR per year, okay let's pretend this one isn't reportable...]. Thank you in advance

Posted By Lorraine Shuker How about a scoring system for inspections, number of Risk Assessments done, number of near misses...?

Posted By Merv Newman For the third time in two weeks I am going to recommend that you contact Neil Budworth and ask for a copy of his paper of proactive measurement of safety performance I. can't really remember the title but he will know what I mean. This time I can supply his e-mail : neil.budworth@serverntrent.co.uk

Posted By Kieran J Duignan Mark KPIs that are 'worth their salt' are derived from a model of strategic business competitiveness that is distinctive to your company. Simply importing them from another context is at odds with what you profess to want.

Posted By Mark Talbot Thanks for the referal, Merv. I will drop him a line. Thanks to Keiran too [new job, million things to do, just want to peek over someone's shoulder, no MBA to write 'a model of strategic business competitiveness' but I still want to avoid the lame ones].

Posted By Neil Pearson Just tried to email Neil Budworth myself for a copy of the paper. I got an error message back, and I suspect there's a typo in the posted email address. Try neil.budworth@severntrent.co.uk

Posted By garyh This is a tricky one, however I suggest that a balance of "inputs" (eg audits / Job Freezes tec) done and "outputs" (number of accidents, Environmental Incidents, Near Misses etc) would be right. The actual items listed will depend on your compeny's culture, of course. Botom line - keep it simple and measurable, balancing good and bad areas.

Posted By Vincent Shields I wouldn't underestimate Kieran's advice. You may get more benefit from seeking out best practice in performance reporting and assurance systems in general, and then applying this learning to your local risk or safety management system. To simply develop the KPI's because they happen to be measurable may contribute some success, but it misses the point of integration into the core business. Just a thought, Vince

Posted By Mark Talbot Thanks for all the replies, and those who emailed me direct. You are all helpful people. I now have more than enough to inspire the kind of kpi's I was looking for. You are right that well-considered kpi's as part of an overall plan to both stimulate and underpin development is ideal - but ideals have to follow on after the initial work that I have to do. Walk, trot, run.... just wanted to miss out crawling. I have two weeks before the report goes in.
