Yes.

1. Put the risk assessment on the photocopier
2. Press copy

Bingo!

Sorry, it is red node day though!

Don'y photocopy your behind, it can go very badly wrong.

Although in the spirit of risk assessment, don't let heavy people photocopy their behing. There is a much lower risk associated with light people photocopying their bum.

However if a heavy person decides they need to photocopy their behind I would suggest the implementation of the following controls:

Get someone to support their weight, this could be achieved by people holding them up by their arms whilst they perched on the copier.

Cover the copy glass with some clear plastic so that if it breaks they are not left with bits of broken glass in their bum.

You could turn the copier on its side and they could back-up to it.

Have a first aid kit and a trained user handy.

Invest in a dicital camera and photo the persons backside instead, you could press a piece of toughened glass against their behind for the same effect.

How would you define a heavy person? Has the HSE produced list of high, medium and low risk people weights? Presumably if you are holding them at arm's length (I would be!) then the weights are reduced?

Have you considered the handling issues with turning the copier on its side? What about when you do this and all the toner spills out - quite likely to cause violence at work when the cleaners see it.....

Happy red nose day everyone

I think we need some advice from the photocopy manufacturers as to their recomended bum copying weight. I guess this would vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.

There is also the issue of point load, that is a light person with a tiny bum may have more point load than a medium wight person with a very wide bum.

I noticed that IOSH are accepting proposals for their R&D fund, I think we are onto something here. Although I will not be volunteering for the practical experiments!

Would a photocopier actually work if it was turned on its side? Does anybody want to try it and inform the forum? And then explain the resulting mess etc to their manager? Well, it is Friday, we need something to do rather than analysing the latest batch of accident returns,

John

PS I'd volunteer to do it myself but the copier is down five flights of stairs and I've got this hamstring injury....

Heather,

if you are holding a weight you are far better holding it your trunk, not at arms length....re man. han. regs....then you'd have to assess hazardous substances, emissions, skid marks etc.

One thing I have seen from manufacturers instructions....MSDS of toner....'inert powder, non-hazourdous except potential explosive in atmosphere'

Then were back to emissions again!

Phil

I know. What I meant was a) If I'm holding a naked person who is trying to photocopy their anatomy I KNOW I'm going to hold them at arms' length and b) the guidance weight for heavy people at arms' length would be less.

I bet Nigel regrets ever posting this now. Don't worry Nigel we're not making fun of you, but it's Friday AND red nose day so we're allowed a little jollity. I'm sure the "this isn't very professional" police will be along soon to stop it. (no Mods, this is not aimed at you...)

Mods = moderators of taste and decency on forums such as this.

Mods = as in mods and rockers (before my time & Phil's apparently - but I'm sure someone of a different vintage will be along soon to explain)

ersatz Mods = the resurgence of mods (the mods and rockers type) in the 1970s riding motorscooters and wearing fishtail parkas. (what was the music that went with this Phil?)

The Clash, The Specials... am I in the right area.

Oh dear (I liked all of them) and I had a parka, but it didn't have a fishtail and I wasn't old enough for a scooter....

Specials certainly, and anything two tone (Vauxhall Viva with a vinyl roof, is that two tone enough, or am I just awakening old nightmares?)

Heather, that was a long lunch break - 2 and 3/4 hours between postings ?

In re mods and a parallel thread on nostalgia, I did once have an "italian" suit complete with a bumfreezer jacket (tying neatly back into the photocopier thread)

Trousers were eaten by girl friend's dog.

Cheeky sausage!

I do stop posting occasionally to do some work. Here in British industry we're lucky if we get ten minutes to eat a sandwich (that may not be quite true, but it sounds good!)

with a quick response, seem to recall there is information regarding photocopiers and risk assessment on one of the union web sites (TUC or UNISON??)

The main risks are
a) the intense light, so cover must be in place
b) the process uses intense heat to seal the powder to the paper
c) the powder can be hazardous but doesnt appear to be listed in anyones COSHH assessment
d) a ream of 80gsm copier paper weighs 2.5Kg - honest. This means a box is 12.5Kg!

such risks involving one of the most common items in the modern office make you wonder how safe it is going to work

Heather,

I,ve just come back to find an error so great ....nay travesty so all consuming, no something worse even than that... I felt I had to continue this thread....

The Clash were most certainly NOT MODs of any discription....although they did turn their hand to any kind of music....they were THE voice of generations and were part of the PUNK movement just not the stiffling spitting/thrash/3Chords one that burnt out....ah those were the days, (still are for me...except for a thinning mohican)

70's MODS were the Jam, some Kinks rip off bands and....I can't remember now....(although, said in a whisper, they were also good)

Scooter boys...mixed Punk with allsorts....in Leeds at any rate....Ska, two tone, killing Joke, the Beat, Specials

sorry, its just close to my heart....

Philby
