Posted By Robert S Woods A client is in the process of purchasing some modular racking. Buying second hand is half the price of new. The suppliers of new racking say the insurance companies will not insure them as they rust from inside which cannot be detected. Is this a selling ploy or is there some substance to this claim. If there is isn’t all racking over a couple of year old a potential death trap? Bob

Posted By Phil.D.Baptiste Robert, Methinks this is a marketing ploy.... there are a great number of firms out there specialising in used racking for all industry types/uses. Try www.sandring.co.uk www.hireport.co.uk www.warehouse-systems.co.uk all will supply with any approprate info you require including SWL notices and labels PS, I'm not affiliated to any of the above or even in the industry....hope this helps Philby

Posted By russ b Further to this, if second hand shelving has been purchased, does anyone know of someone who could test and certify it in its new location.

Posted By Gordon Thelwell Hello Robert, Further to your enquiry from our website, i wish to say on the behalf of all that on the whole this is a marketing ploy used by the UNREGULATED Racking Industry. My advice is to identify whether the racking has been stored/used in open weather/outside. If so, do not use. Always enquire what the previous use of the racking was. If it is preused and is advertised as 'referbished' approach with caution and demand that a sample beam be delivered to site THEN have it cut open and inspect the inside. If in doubt, please feel free to send photographs of the racking to me and i shall give you an independent observation. Best wishes, Gordon.

Posted By Greg Ace Ive had the same problem with insurers. Second hand racking was a big no-no in their eyes and we ended up sourcing new stuff just to please the insurance people. Bit of a shame because of the cost but we found a company in South Wales that offered different types of racking solutions at a pretty tidy price. Cant remember the guys name now but the web address is still in use. www.rjheale.co.uk
