Posted By Ian Clay1 I have been asked by a builder friend of mine if it is allowed to repair and erect guttering from ladders, or will their be a need for scaffolding? The job can take between 1 and 3 days, and he is unsure what will be needed. As construction is not my field is there any one out there who can anyone help/

Posted By Jeff Manion One to three days! When will it start, the "Work at Height" regulations come into affect early April 2005. Yes scaffold of other measure. Ladder in my view is not acceptable at all. Mobile tower scaffold is good as well, consider what can happen if ladder moves, he leans, where are tools and equipment on ladder?. JM

Posted By J Knight While absolutely agreeing with Jeff its not a question of whether he's 'allowed' to or not; he has to do an assessment. He should follow best practice guidance, such as HSE's HSG150 H&S in construction or HSG33 H&S in roof work. The guidance given should steer him very stongly away from the idae of doing three day's work off a ladder, John

Posted By SIMON HOWES .....and as a practical note, if he's got that much work to do (by inference on an existing building) then a properly though out system - eg a cherrypicker can be hired readily and cheaply - will be quicker and easier. Then he can charge for 3 days work, get it done in 2, spend half a day's pay on the hire and thus get richer and live longer. Why do people make life difficult for themselves?
