Hi
Very new to H&S, sent on the NEBOSH General Certificate course and told to get on with it!! Have been asked to draw up the organisation & responsibilties for the company. Not sure how much detail to go into does anyone have any tips or examples they could share.

Be explicit about how people's H&S responsibilities fit in. I've seen many examples of organograms in H&S policies which have no mention whatever of H&S duties, which is a waste of time really. What I will be producing will be a set of alternative org charts which show reporting and management lines for H&S; this will be different from the standard charts within my organisation. Don't forget to date them and give them a periodic update; some parts fo my employer's undertaking replace all staff at the rate of about 30% per annum; charts get out of date very quickly; using titles rather than people will help to reduce the need for updates but everywhere I've ever worked has had a passion for restructuring as well,
John

As part of my role I am the sad person who has to go round and inspect and check these.
My own views, keep it simple and clear and pin down key tasks for managers.
If they are not real and match workplace level of risk then they are worth nothing at all when things go wrong.
I would seek get a range of possible organisational arrangements and talk them through with the people who will have to use them.
Work to get them involved and them 'buying in', at the end of the day its not the paperwork that keeps them safe, its what they do or do not do.
Trawl through the HSE web site in relation to your own business industry, make use of your company's IT, no one likes lots of paperwork.
Set out a 2 or 3 year plan and get them signed up to it.
