Does anyone know where I can get information regarding recommendations for heights of assembly line tables?
We have recently had reports regarding bad backs from staff working at thepacking tables.
As our staff range from 4ft 11 up to 6ft 7, which ever way we adjust the tables, it is creating problems for others.
This is also very difficult to risk assess.

Your question 'Does anyone know where I can get information regarding recommendations for heights of assembly line tables?'
is the wrong one to start with.
As you have recently had reports regarding bad backs from staff working at the packing tables, one thing is now certain: the risk of foreseeable serious injury is high. The alarm is ringing loudly and the colour is RED, RED, RED.
You are right however in thinking that it is not an easy risk to assess; the range of the heights of the workers involved indicate that you need to start with relevant ergonomic research and not simply 'information' or 'guidelines'. The books of Steve Pheasant are probably the best to get going.
On the basis of the (very limited) information available, the best I can recommend is that you start with the ergonomic tools of task analysis and functional allocation and proceed from there.
If you need a speedy but reliable solution, involve a professional safety ergonomist i.e. someone who is a registered safety practitioner as well as a registered ergonomist.
Above all, don't let matters drift. The evidence on your company's website indicates that it is substantial enough to fund a viable solution as long as you put a coherent case to the board.
If you would like to have a brief telephone conversation about the way ahead, you are welcome to phone me on 020 8654 0808.
