I have just read in the Guardian last night that there are plans afoot by the Danish equivalent of our HSE to bring in charges to Employees for all PPE that is required within the workplace.
The head of the Danish HSE, a Mrs Germain Olof, states that it is her intention when in September of this year the Danish take over the Presidency of the EU, to push through with Directive EU 56APR98723- IL.
If successful this will have the affect of removing section 9 of HASWA. Mrs Olof believes that if Employees are charged for PPE then they will ultimately be responsible for ensuring that not only they look after the items but will ensure that they wear their PPE at all times, thus reducing accidents in the workplace.
It will be interesting to hear your thoughts on the above.

Interesting subject this Dave,
Undoubtedly there is a lot of money spent each year by employers on PPE. It would seem on the face of it to be a good idea, if they had to pay for the equipment themselves they would be much more likely to look after it and wear it. I think it’s much more to do with management of the employees. In some company’s it is drummed into them that they must wear items of PPE and look after them, if the stall is set out from the start. I don’t think you have much of a problem. The problem I’ve found is when you have a weak manager who lets people get away with not wearing such items. I remember on one of the sites I look after, a guy just starting on the job coming into the site agent’s office for his induction, he was kitted out with everything and looked the business. To me he had obviously been on a site were the culture was to ensure everyone wore their PPE. Two weeks later I visited the site again to find this guy without his hard hat, Hi Viz etc. I asked him what had changed; he said no one wears it on here. I think we have all had the experience were people disappear into buildings when we come on site and come back with their PPE on. They know what is expected, but again it’s down to management and culture. I don’t know if making them pay for it would make them wear it. It would be much more likely to be kept in the back of the van, wrapped in the plastic bag it came in.

David,
In view of the date to day would you please identify exactly which article you are quoting and the author?
Interestingly Google has never heard of EU 56APR98723
Please could you now confirm if this thread is intended to be an April Fools joke.

Well Dave, I thought it was funny!
Folks - you should know this is a wind-up, the Danes are not due to take over the presidency of the EU in September - in fact the UK will hold it from Jul-Dec 05.
Dave had to pick Denmark to use the first name Olof - not good at anagrams then?
It is Friday.
