Posted By Thomas Elliott Hi All, I have recently started a new position of Corporate Health and Safety Officer for a Local Authority. One of my first projects is to revise the First Aid arrangements. Following the HSE guidance “First Aid at Work, your questions answered” I have came up with a number of questions I would like all managers to answer in order to allow me to assess the current arrangements. These questions are as follows: 1.What are the risks of injury and ill health identified in any risk assessment that has been carried out within your department? 2.Are there any specific (HIGH) risks? E.g. working with hazardous substances, machinery, dangerous loads, electricity, chemicals etc. If yes, please state. 3.Are there areas of your establishment where different levels of risk can be identified? E.g. in a car repair garage, school premises. If yes, please specify. 4.What is your record of accidents and cases of ill health? 5.What type are the accidents or cases of ill health and where did they occur? 6.How many people are employed on your site? 7.How many third parties, on average, are on site? Include who (e.g. contractors, pupils, interviewees, clients, members of the public etc) 8.Are there inexperienced workers, employees with disabilities or employees with special health problems on site? If yes, please specify. 9. Do you employ “Work Experience pupils? If yes, please specify numbers, locations and details of temporary duties. 10.Is your premises spread out? E.g. several buildings on site or multi-floor buildings. 11.Is there shift work or out of hours work involved? If yes, please state. 12.Is your workplace remote from emergency services (undesirable response time from emergency services)? Ambulance / Fire brigade / Police. If yes, please explain. 13.Do you have employees who travel regularly or who work alone? If yes, please specify. 14.Do any of your employees work at sites occupied by other employers? If yes, please state. 15.Do you currently have any employees who are first aiders? If yes, please state names and when their first aid certificate expires. 16.Do you currently have any employees who are deemed an appointed person? If yes, please state names. 17.Please outline a description of their training. 18.How many first aid boxes do you have in your premises? 19.Do you have a first aid room? My reason for posting is that I would like to determine if these questions are sufficient in order to collate the information I require. Can you please let me know if there are other question I should add that are advised. Many Thanks Thomas

Posted By steven bentham Thomas Lots of good work, why don't you consider putting your questions into a self assessment format and when your managers have done the assessment they should be able to work it out for themselves. i.e. High risk work = full first aiders etc Low risk work = appointed first aider etc Your current strategy could swamp you with the results of questionnaires. Your Authority should already have reasonable provision for first aid?
