Need help again folk, (gulp) I have been given the task of a presentation at board level to convince the company of the need for a permanent H&S Manager (Director) with luck it will yours truly, trouble is they are a bit dinosaur with their attitude towards H&S so I am searching for a PowerPoint on the importance of a H&S Manager, I could create my own but this has been sprung on me so to speak, I need it for the early part of next week!
The company has an asset of around a hundred million so they ain't no small fry organisation, I would really appreciate some recommendations on where to look or would appreciate a presentation that I can adjust to their needs to convince them.

Charley,
I'm gonna be cruel. If you are in line for that sort of job, congratulations and all that but you should be capable of running up a quick ten slide PP over the weekend all on your own. And when it comes to the actual presentation you will have much more depth and be that much more convincing than if you had "borrowed" someone elses presentation.
So you dont get to sainsburys with your wife and cant go to MacDo with the kids. Sorry, but think to the future. I'm sure they will understand and be very very quiet and will bring soothing cups of tea every hour, on the hour. Won't they ?
Merv
Or ask a consultant to help you. (afraid that will be emergency call out rates, mate)

Charley,
I have sent you a presentation on email.
Never mind Merv. He is protecting his consultancy.
Not all of us consultants are quite so unhelpful. LOL.

Charley,
If you are having difficulty convincing the company to have someone oversee H&S what type of authority and support do you expect to see if you get the job.
This first step might be the easiest. The real challenge begins after your appointment.
Just a thought
Tom

I agree with our first respondent in that if you need to ask, you are probably not ready! Seriously, this sort of preparation needs to be though through long before a requested Board presentation so that you are ready and only have to 'top & tail' it for the day. I have learned the hard way and regularly update my 'overviews' and my CV so that I am ready. Sadly, I don't often get the call but when I do - well I hope that it will be a lot easier - it was the last time! My guidance came from an older manager in my business who helped me focus on what was important to the Board and also helped me by commenting on my presentations and ideas before the time came. It pays to develop a Mentor - ask a Board member if they would be willing to help you - they don't always bite! you will be surprised that they will admit to being 'seen as a closed shop' and grateful for someone who will ask for help, rather than complain about conditions.
Treat this challenge as a precursor to the next one that will make an important career change for you! Of course, some people get all the luck!
Regards and good luck, George

Okee dokee point taken, thanks though Paul for the kind thoughts.
Tom, you make a very valid point, one I had not thought out in depth, and I thank you for that!
George& Merv; am sending the kids and the wife over to you for the weekend, you are right of course distractions aside I should be fine, they are all house trained so it should be ok! Oh, Tommy loves a bedtime story based around section 22's HA74...., other than that it should be fine.....
Right, off to create a PowerPoint on why you should have an H&S Manager person.. Hmmmm do I really need this 80k job????!!!!

Don't be so negative, if they are asking for a presentation your in mate, of for it. Tell them how it can help their business, positive image, the lot, stay off lots of boring powerpoint presentations and legal bull!
Talk business talk and improvements for the future.
Find out what your competitors are doing and tell them you can do it better. Oh, not only for 80k but a big car as well.

Happy to apply for the post of director, will even do the presentation on your behalf.
Sadly though, the others are right, if you didn't think in the first instance you could manage it, what makes you think your up for it?
Suggest concentrating on the benefits (not the £80K salary, or large car) but to that of the benefits, your image on the presentation is not what the company can do for health & safety, but what health & safety can do for it!!
Best of luck......and don't forget the families PJ's for the night with Merv!!

Point taken ol boy, I did not intend to be rude, I just didn't want anyone wasting any time sending me a PP now that it is finished.
I will be presenting the ol PP on Wednesday with a days training thrown in for the board and the Co Sec, should know by the end of the day where I will be with the job, I guess its around 50/50 at the minute with no budget as yet for H&S!
So my best guess is that if I do well, and they can bring some budget from other areas this year, I should be in with a fighting chance, it will be nice to be in one place as opposed to darting around to different clients each week, I guess I fancy some stability for a change.
Will post what happens Thursday or Friday.
All the best

Er, I have to go to Lyon on Friday to make a presentation to a group of managers on :
1. the benefits of OHSAS 18001 and how to obtain it
2. The benefits of Behavioural Based Safety and how to do it at home.
Anyone got any appropriate power points ?
(should be in French)
Merv
Good luck Charley, looking forward to your next posting

I would gladly assist as you have asked, trouble is ol boy its in double dutch as opposed to French, but I can help with the BBS, give em the The Praxis Six Cell Analysis Model that'll crack em up for sure!
Hang on...I can feel a posting coming on, I must resist I must resist I must resist, oh by the way I purchased some of those 'Acti mind' pills as advertised on GMTV, they help the memory and and and stop you repeating yoursel, trouble is I took em for 4 days now I can't remember where I put the other 2 boxes!
Off for my lay down in a darkened room.
Charley.

In the words of the prophet "stuff praxis, who needs her !"
BBS ain't that complex. All we need to remember is how did we react to our first baby's first steps. You remember, when he/she took two steps and fell on his/her bum ? What did you do/say ? How did you feel ?
Now translate that to the workplace.
Voila. It's that easy.
Merv
Still wish you well on the presentation.

Dear all
Is it not the purpose of this site to assists all of our colleagues to improve Health and Safety?
If we disagree with the posting should we not just keep quite instead of sniping?
In the words of Winston Churchill – we can fool some of the people some of the time – but not all of the people all of the time!
Come on guys can we be helpful instead of hindering the “postee” of this thread.
Regards
David B
PS – let us know hoe you get on Charley!
