Posted By mark c o'loughlin i am currently working on a project - toward my dip. in H & S - regarding the problems of communicating H & S issues to non-national operatives in the construction industry. My own experience has shown that there are issues in this area from language barriers and also different practices in operatives home countries. I would appreciate any input / direction members could offer. Thanks, Mark

Posted By Messy I would also be interested in the issue of communicating H&S info to persons whose 1st language is not English. In addition to the high risk buildng industry this is also a huge problem in other poor pay industries such as Hotel and Health, which both have (perhaps less direct) H&S risks such as sleeping 'guests' on the premises

Posted By mark c o'loughlin the authorities, in ireland at least, seem to think that 'pictograms' are the answer but a picture with no explanation to it can i think be more confusing than no information at all! Aside from international standard signs such a a running man with an arrow beside an exit sign how do you picture-form something like the basics of site safety?
