Hi all, sunday working for some,
HSE information sheet MISC614 states that for work under 5m a fall restraint lanyard should be used with a harness and suitable anchor point when in MEWP or cherry picker. Over the past few weeks whilst working on a major construction site, inside buildings. I have been telling contracors that the shock absorber lanyard of 1.8m is not suitable. If the worker is around 1.7 metres tall and the rip stitch is also 1 metre+ ,combined with the average height of work of around 4 metres then it is ineffective.
The answer i get is "we have always used them" and when i see pictures in the British safety council mag"Safety Management" p15 April 2005. I wonder am I right?[man in cherry picker with fall arrest lanyard] Any constructive advice would be appreciated.

Bank on.
A fall arrest harness in a cherrypicker is no use under 4 metres, there was some dim and distant guidance in the past saying that above that is okay - but should a worker carry two, one for 4m and under and one for 4 m and over falls??????
We have always insisted on restraint harness which limit movement or stop them climbing out! We have also investigated accidents where these have been in place and worked for real (if it had been a full harness, laynard and fall arrest it would have been a double fatality job!)
Have a close look at the work and the expected heights to be worked, and don't forget when they mix and match low and high work! It needs to be uncomplicated for the users.

If you read the misc 614 again you will see that one of the reasons for the fixed lanyard is to prevent the machine from turning over in the case of a fall.
additionally request a report from the manufacturers of the machine on whether the anchorage point will take the weight of a person in fall arrest.

As the guys have said it should be a restraint lanyard without fall arrest to prevent them climbing outside the cage and being thrown out.
At one of our American mills, a guy didn't have the lanyard attached and the MEWP overturned, throwing him out. He ended up critically ill.
