Hello Everyone - Advice Required!

I work for an organisation that has a commercial arm which includes the sale of potted plants etc that are cultivated in a large long greenhouse. The chief horticulturalist on occasion can be seen using a stepladder to gain access to the roof and then proceeds to clear the moss away from the channels in the lower V of the roofs. No harness, no slip resistant boots and no lower arm/upperbody protection.

I have a few concerns!! Access to the roof, protection from falls on the roof, the height of the greenhouses and the potential for multiple lacerations should he fall! He tells me however that the practice in which he engages is "Common Practice" for that industry!

Advice required please as to a commercially available solution to my problem!

Many thanks

Vince

The Work at Height Regulations have just come into force (6 April) and they will require some changes to the system of work you have described.

See HSE guidance INDG401 for brief details (http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg401.pdf) or the Regs for the complete legal position (http://www.legislation.hmso.gov.uk/si/si2005/20050735.htm).
