Posted By MRA I have a client who is planning to open a leisure centre within their hotel operation which would not be directly supervised by a member of staff (or so the plan is currently). Does anyone have any guidance material on the pro's and con's of such an approach?

Posted By Stuart Nagle MRA. Just for info. Over the years I have stayed in numerous hotels in the UK that have pools and/or small gyms. I have yet to find one that either has; 1) Supervision 2) Induction to the use of gym equipment 3) Instructions on use 4) A qualified life guard on the staff Stuart

Posted By Clairey O Hi If you go the website of either the ISRM (yes only 1 I!) or ILAM you will find guidance there. I vaguely remember a guidance booklet on facilit design etc, but can't remeber its name for the life of me. Other than that it would be managing safety in swimming pools, if they were planning a pool. Completley agree with Stuart's comments about qualified staff being present, inductions and undergoing regular staff training. Hope this helps Claire

Posted By steven bentham I think you might find different standards with pools: public recreational pools are enforced by HSE, hotel pools I think are enforced by Local Authority Inspectors. You can drown in either type of pool (big or small) but the this is an area where the enforcing bodies have not necessarily sorted what the risks and enforcement strategies should be. I would want my own kids supervised at a pool with a trained lifeguard, would'nt you?
