Posted By DW Some of our fire wardens are becoming a little disgruntled as they have no cash incentives, although we offer incentives to first aiders. I wondered if anyone else offers these or has any knowledge of. DW

Posted By Bill Morrison1 On this issue, we have also been approached by safety rep's asking for some financial recognition for their efforts. They asked if we pay first aiders why not, safety rep's etc, after all we are not talking about huge sums here its about £250 a year. Bill

Posted By Bob Baynes I am a fire warden and was initially doing it 'for free'. We were then put on the same footing as first aiders (£10 per month - I think) I didn't and don't do it for the money, neither does anyone else here but however false the impression, it did feel as if our efforts were being appreciated. Merv's suggestion would probably have worked just as well though a regular payment will probably continue long after the MD has lost interest/become too busy/is not on site and that's if you can persuade him to do it at all. If some measly amount keeps your chaps happy and everyone safe, pay up, particularly if the alternative is having no fire wardens.

Posted By Anita Parkinson We don't offer cash incentives for either first aiders or fire wardens. We don't have a big problem with keeping them happy or motivated although some probably would be happy with more money (I won't metion this thread to them) our Fire wardens are trained by the local fire authority annually and while at work they are responsible for everything concerned with the prevention of fire, with me as there sounding board. The same works for the first aiders I would suggest give them more of a say in how they organise and see if you can make the task more interesting, if its just a question of more money then I would ask what they are going to give me in return as saving someones life in either a fire or first aid emergency is every employees duty not just the priviledged trained employees.

Posted By NeilM Poyznts-Powell In the past I have not offered cash incentives for safety roles as I wanted well motivated people not those who will perform the role solely for the extra cash. I have usualy stressed the benefits in terms of saving lives of loved ones at home, if there were an emeregency sittuation. With regard to Fire Wardens, you could place the provision in the supervisors day-to-day responsibilities at no extra cost. Regards, Neil

Posted By Heather Aston We pay a small annual sum to first aiders. This is rationalise on the basis that they are volunteers, we couldn't manage without them and appreciate the work they do. In return they take some responsibility for looking after the first aid suplies and so on in addition to their normal duties. Fire wardens - we call them fire marshals - are usually supervisors. Their specific duties don't extend beyond checking everyone is out during a fire evacuation. Obviously as supervisors they are also responsible to an extent for maintenance of good fire safety precautions in their area - clear gangways and that sort of thing. They are not paid extra as fire marshals. Payment for safety reps - that's a new one! With all due respect to them - and we have some excellent ones in our company - this is not a management role. They are elected by their members not appointed by the company. Therefore I do not believe they should be paid by the Company. I'd be interested to hear what any safety reps on here might think about that. Heather

Posted By jackw. Hi, I am in an LA we pay first aiders around £300.00 a year but do not renumerate fire wardens, H&S reps etc. I think this is mostly historical and has been long standing in LA's. So far we have not had any gripes about this.But i am sure there will be some that have a quiet moan to co-workers about it. Messy were did you learn cost benefit analysis? Time away from their normal duties for any level of staff = ££££££££s lost At least it did when I was taught economics. Not sure i should also mention the "opportunity" cost. I know getting "Costs" technical.. on an H&S site.. wash my mouth with soap. or should that be my keyboard.. come to think of it...........
