Posted By Paul Daniell I am providing HSE support to a building refurbishment project. The minimum PPE requirement for eyewear is EN 166 1F (low energy impact) compliance from the trades is good but concerns have been raised about the long term health effects of wearing safety eyewear for extended periods. I have spoken to the main manufacturers of safety eyewear who provide some reassurance but I am looking for any further independent source of information.

Posted By Richard Chalkley Paul, Exactly what type of eye wear are you concerned about? I'm in a scientific environment and my guys (about 60 scientists) wear safety glasses every working day of their career with no issues, it's just part of the uniform. There is good user acceptability although I do have a choice of 4 types to acheive this. Does this help? Richard.

Posted By Merv Newman We have had "visitor" type eye protections checked by an opthalmic optician. His firm opinion is that they would not have any negative effect on eyesight, even if worn for long periods. Users should look after them as if they were their own property : avoid scratches, keep them clean. People who HAVE to wear them as part of their job (eg lab workers) take a few hours/days to get the habit (moaning ALL the time) and then it is no problem. Try a bit of positive reinforcement : "Hey ! don't you look sexy in those, Big Boy/Girl !" Merv

Posted By TBC The only time you will get an issue with eye protection is when it is not looked after i.e. it is left to get contaminated or thrown around and becomes scratched or dirty. This may then give a certain amount of eye strain. Agree with above no problem otherwise. Regards

Posted By Fred Pratley This is almost certainly a ploy to get you to back down on the eye protection issue by inventing a "concern". Millions have to wear glasses all day every day, and if there were a problem, I think we might just have known about it by now.

Posted By Bev Some people find it difficult to adjust initially, as any glasses will slightly alter the field of vision, just like the difference between looking through a window. However, I have not heard of any long term problems at all. Strangely, I never heard any complaints about wearing tinted eye protection; mind you, they did look like really good sports/cycling shades! Expect your requests for these to come in with the Summer if your people are outdoors!
