Posted By Mel Berry Hi, I am currently an asbestos building surveyor and wanted to pick your brains. I have just found out i am pregnant and am reluctant to tell my boss straight away until i know everything is ok, i appreciate it may become obvious if i suffer with morning sickness etc Personally i am not concerned about the pregnancy affecting my work for now and i will of course tell work when the time is right but do i need to mention earlier on health and safety grounds with the nature of my work? thanks in advance Mel

Posted By Chris Pope If I were an employer I would like to be considerate to you and try to avoid sending you into premises where access is likely to be difficult. I can't see any good reason for delaying telling the employer. If the employer is unlikely to take a balanced view on this very normal employment issue start looking for another employer.

Posted By Linda Crossland-Clarke Hi Not sure, but don't forget your body temperature will rise, which may be an issue with you wearing overalls. Along with the need to drink lots of water and then pee. And then there's the whole balance thing if you are working at height. However, congratulations. (smile) Linda

Posted By David Curless Your employer is obliged to carry out risk assessments specific to your pregnancy and work role/taks. If he does not know, then he obviously cannot do this.

Posted By Roger the Dodger If you have an accident and your pregnancy was a factor in it, having NOT told your employer they would have a sronewall defence against you. Your employer has no additional responsibilities towards your or your baby until you have formally told them with a confirmation note/certificate from your doctor/midwife. You should inform tham as soon as you reasonably can. As said before, if your employer has an issue with your pregnancy, its time to get another employer - its 2005 not 1925.

Posted By Rich Hall maybe strongarm tactics are needed here mel, does your employer provide LEV , and suitable masks for you to wear, if so you havent a leg to stand on, however, asbestos can be traced in open air so beware. I think i read somewhere that it can get into water coolers in offices if dusty so filter it before drinking. PPE is the last form of defence dont forget your basics , otherwise you should be ok.

There is no legal duty to inform by a specific date, but there is a legal duty to inform the employer of anything that would compromise your safety - or those of others [e.g. your baby]. So, an informed approach after talking with health professionals would be the best option. I don't know your reasons for delaying the announcement, but they should be weighed against the benefits of an informed employer. Asebestos is not going to be the problem to your baby, but as Linda said, the working conditions might put undue stresses on your, and baby's, body. Good luck ... Mark
