What are members experiences of seeking new employment via both of these routes? and is one better than another, or is the use of both in tandem a better idea?

use them both and keep an eye on the window of the local newsagent , they are usually a good source.

It all depends on what you're looking for Malcolm.

If you're after permanent or semi-permanent employment, the Recruitment Agencies are probably a better bet than the adverts which only really get seen by your competitors unless you pay out to be in the Times, Independant etc!

For short-term contracts and consultancy you will just have to work at least as hard at getting known and seen as at actually earning the money for several years - there is no quick and easy unless you really do have a fairy godperson to wave the magic or an existing trusted contact to open the door.

I wish you well, whichever route you dedice on, it will require a lot of work. I would also be happy if you came back in a month and told me that I was wrong - it really is easy-peasy.

If looking for permanent work I find a lot of agencies to be next to useless - remember you are at least 3rd in their list of priorities.

1. They wish to secure a placement and earn their commission - who they place they don't care about.

2. They wish to secure repeat work from their client - i.e. get more money out of them.

3. Finally they might consider the candidates situation and needs
