Posted By Nigel Singleton BSc I am interested in members thoughts on the following problem: A local restaurant is situated in a pedestrian precinct and has staff working till 1am. The local buses run until 11pm, so the only way to get the staff home is by taxi. The nearest taxi rank is 600m from the restaurant. The restaurant has previously asked the taxi drivers to drive up to the restaurant to pick the staff up and hence avoid the need to walk through the city centre in the early hours. This involves the taxis driving onto the pedestrian area. The local police and council have told the restaurant that this practice must stop and taxis will be issued with a ticket if they drive onto the pedestrian area. Neither party appears willing to dicuss the safety implications of asking staff some of whom may be female to walk to the taxi rank. The risk assessment suggests that staff should not have to walk from the restaurant. Has anyone come across a problem like this before and if so what was the outcome.

Posted By Charley Farley-Trelawney Nigel Having assessed a similar situation some years ago here in the West Country, I found the solution was actually easier than first thought. The company I was retained by had been warned by the Police etc about accessing the paved area and stated that tickets would be issued. Now we knew that 12.30pm was always the time to finish and always escorted the staff to the taxis, 1, we never had people stood on their own, always in pairs, 2, we contacted the civilian authorities and asked if CCTV could be made available at that time, 3, the local nightclub was not far away so we asked the management if they would mind including the safety of our staff on their CCTV and the door staff, (this amounted to a free meal for the manager once a month, no great shakes) 4, if all of the above failed no staff were permitted to walk the distance on their own, always pairs, and if there was an odd one out, then the manager walked one odd member of staff. I still see the client from time to time, and even the 'hooray henrys' from the nightclub are only to pleased to accompany the staff to the taxis, it does something for the macho image so I understand! Yes, sometimes the simple eliminations are the best, and I enjoy my complimentary meal in and out. Good fortune Charles
