Posted By Jonathan Barratt An IOSH Member working for a major textile retail company has issued the following enquiry: With fabric-sourcing offices and a garment factory in places such as Hong Kong and Sri Lanka, information relating to safety duties/responsibilities/accountabilities towards these international companies, or direction toward good sources of information is sought. Any help or advice that readers of this forum could offer would be most appreciated. Many thanks, Jon Barratt

Posted By Rakesh Maharaj John Our unit consults with international companies on a regular basis. We develop global compliance systems for complex multinationals that often include design of delegated responsibilities, development and consultation on KPIs and even assist some of these organisations implement their systems. In undertaking this work, our researchers have been tasked with a very similar exercise and have not been able to pin point general information in this area. Our conclusion was that for responsibilities to be acknowledged and effectively discharged at an international level, that a company specific system had to underpin these responsibilities. Should the enquirer have any questions or chat about some of our case studies, s/he is most welcome to contact me on 0870 839 5269. Kind regards Rakesh

Posted By Merv Newman John, the majority of the multi-national companies with whom we work insist that the foreign supplier comply with national legislation first and, simultaneously, their own safety management system. But not OSHA or UK regs. And they ask for documented proof of the first during audits required by the second. You try installing a sprinkler system to Fire Officer's regulations and to American standards. (actually came out quite well with a linked-grid system instead of "main and branches")

Posted By Rob T Jon, Have you tried contacting the IOSH International Specialist Group? Their site is under Specialist Groups. There are strong links with the Hong Kong branch of IOSH in particular.
