I'm trying to find out what "competent" means, in terms of teaching manual handling. I have a graduate diploma in OH&S from Dublin City University, I have 4 years experience in warehouse and transport work. If I have access to the teaching materials and I understand them, can I train the warehouse staff? Or do I have to pay a consultant EUR 1000 for the privelege? HSA says I need the cert. Any thoughts?

Hi, within the definition of 'competent' you will need the experience and competancy in not only your subject but also 'in teaching'.
Our confined space instructers are city and guilds 7302 'train the trainers, our parent company instructs the 'train the trianer' course. So in theory you could attend a 5 day course, using your subject and be a recognised trainer.
Hope this helps

Only your student can tell if you are competent - have you practical information to impart, have you got communication skills and a good sense of humour, able to make the subject interesting, able to demonstrate in a work area relevant to the students, make an impact on them that changes bad habits learned over years ?

Have you done the practical work you are going to teach, i.e. labour lifting the stuff yourself for a week - then see if your teaching is okay and will improve.
We all see construction operatives block laying and can all talk about manual handling to them; a good test is to try a week on site with them and then talk to them ?
