Posted By Robert Local news last night informed of Wimpole Hall no longer allowing children to pick eggs direct from the hens nests or feed the goats on advice from a "National Health Organisation" thet salmonella etc can be transmitted. The locals are obviously astonished at this. Where is the Country going and who actually endorses this type of nanny watchkeeper attitude? Children have been feeding goats farm animals etc for centuries, I know, I was one--------a child that is!!!!!

Posted By J Knight I thought that feeding goats and sheep farm animals is how we got BSE? Nobody actually endorses this kind of thing at all, somebody is given some advice and reacts in a risk averse way, instead of asking sensible questions about frequency and relative risk and so on, John

Posted By Danny Swygart They all ready have suitable hand washing stations at Wimpole, which I would have thought was a sensible and effective control measure. Why go OTT?

Posted By Chas You may be interested in the 'sensible safety presentation' on the HSE 'What's New, week beginning 16/5/05' website. It may enable people to make rational decisions, if they are made aware of its content.

Posted By Bev Imagine if they collect eggs, feed the goats and then go on to make a model from loo rolls. Hopefully they'll have a chance to recover when they go out at break to play conkers.

Posted By Jonathan Breeze The irony being that they'd probably survive all this only to be run over by a parent with a SUV at the school gate.

Posted By Gerry Knowles Yes we are back to the loo rolls thread and all the rest of the stupidity. I have noticed that the people who make these apparently unrational decisions or give the advice are never named or their qualifications given. It is always elf and safety. They are all giving our profession a bad name and I for one am sick of it. Gerry Knowles

Posted By Vera Shilling It was rather a shame that this story broke when it did. The Health Protection Agency, the veterinary laboratories agency, South Cambridgeshire District Council and HSE have been investigating a number of cases of suspected e.coli 0157 gastroenteritis. These investigations have identified four confirmed cases which have been linked directly to Wimpole Farm. Prior to receiving confirmation of e.coli 0157 at the farm the National Trust put in additional control measures to stop transmission of possible infections. These included limiting contact with animals on a temporary basis. Obviously the National Trust and the other agencies needed to be quite sure of the facts before releasing information so it was difficult to respond to allegations of OTT safety measures. The correct and full information is now in the public domain. I’d just like to point out that I am MIOSH RSP. Members of the Infection Control Committee are very experienced and well qualified but we are now on the receiving end of an Elf and Safety story. But I think it goes with the job and I’m sure it will be another Safety Officer and another organisation next week. Vera – Safety

Posted By Jonathan Breeze Thank you for appraising us of the true facts of the situation Vera. The media ran the story without reference to the fact that there had already been a suspected outbreak linked to the farm. Proving the maxim that a little knowledge can be dangerous My confidence in the profession is restored and my cynicism of the media justified.
