Posted By Jon Bradburn We are considering aquiring an XRF spectrometer for sample analysis. Can anyone offer advice on the requirements of radiation protection advisor and radiation protection supervisor. It has been suggested we dont require either, though my gut feeling is we do. I am likely to have to do the RA work on this but am unfamiliar with the subject other than basic knowledge. Sound advice or a kick in the right direction would be appreciated. Regards Jon B

Posted By Stephen D. Clarke Jon, At my last place of work, in R&D laboratories, we had a number of XRF spectrometers, all staff who used them wore film badges, one member of staff was appointed as an RPS and trained by the NRPB at Leeds (1 week course as I recall). The NRPB acted as our RPA and did a site inspection every year. regards Steve

Posted By John Donaldson The work you are undertaking will fall under the Ionising Radiations Regulations 1999 (IRR99). As such you will be regarded as a “Radiation Employer” and be required to consult with a Radiation Protection Advisor (Reg 13 (1)). However if the work falls within Schedule 1 of the Regulations then you need not consult with a RPA. It’s a bit of a Catch 22 in that you may need to consult with an RPA to see if Schedule 1 can be applied. All of the other requirements of IRR 99 will of course still apply. If you let me know where you are located I may be able to point you in the direction of an RPA (trust this does not break the moderating rules).

Posted By Richie I work for the MOD, who have all singing - all dancing systems when it comes to Radiation. I am an RPS trained Safety Officer. The publication is called JSP 392, and is available to the public for free! Volume 2, ch 35 deals with Fluoroscopes, and there is also a section which deals with when RPAs are required to be called upon for advice. The publication puts IRR into bite size chunks with reasonable systems to control such machines. Take a look, you may get value from it. Posted By Kevin Drew All, Pedantic I know but please note, it's radiation protection adviser not advisor. I am an RPA myself. There are numerous companies out there that can provide this service, my own included. A simple web search should produce a wealth of providers. Kevin Drew

Posted By Jon Bradburn LOL - thanks for the english lesson, I am glad NEBOSH dont take spelling into account or I would be well stuffed Eh! Thanks to all. As I said I was at this stage looking for confirmation which route we need to follow. All sources have been useful. Even considering tapping up the equipment supplier to provide or help cover training /assessment costs, after all they get a nice commission of £60K of kit. Failing that you never know I may be in need of one of your services. Regards to All Jon B
