Robert,
There is no minimum requirement specified for experience, however a competent surveyor should have at least the P402. UKAS require the P402 with the following experience -
Type 1 Survey - 6 months appropriate experience in surveying buildings and at least 5 surveys for asbestos during which competence is assessed.
Type 2 Survey - 6 months appropriate experience in surveying buildings and at least 5 Type 2 surveys for asbestos during which competence is assessed.
Type 3 Survey - 6 months appropriate experience in surveying buildings and at least 5 Type 2 or 3 surveys for asbestos during which competence is assessed by a fully qualified surveyor.
Some organisations use only the P402 as a competence base, however with the quantity of product types that contain asbestos, the complexities of sampling procedures and variations of buidling types competence cannot be taught in 3 days.
Our company will not allow surveyors to become lead surveyors until undertaking the P402 and gaining 12 months experience with a lead surveyor.
The best method of assessing the competence is to go with a UKAS accreddited Survey company.
