Posted By J Knight Eeyup chaps, What's the odds in NVQ5 and MSc? I have Dip2 and am RSP so will be CMIOSH come the dawn of the new millenium (well, November) so I don't need to go any further from that point of view, but I feel some mysterious urge to punish myself and am considering further study for its own sake. I've got a fairly good idea of the pros, cons and structure of MSc, but know little about NVQ5. For instance, would I learn anything (I know NVQs are about formal ratification of knowledge and practice but is there nonetheless some learning involved?)? How long would it take? What kind of recognition has it got? After all, the letters MSc after the name would look quite nice; what would I get for NVQ5? Any opinions welcome, especially from those who have done/are doing the NVQ, John

Posted By Jayne Dunn I'm in the middle of an MSc and would highly recommend it. I finished the post grad diploma in March and just starting the research for my dissertation. From my point of view and speaking to those who have recently finished their MSc, the learning curve from an academic aspect in addition to the practical exp is well worth the pain. I think the NVQ is valuable as a qualification but I would rather have the letters after my name!

Posted By Jack John, You say 'would I learn anything' in relation to the NVQ5. I would also ask the question in relation to the MSc (to someone who is already a Dip 2 holder). I doubt you would learn that much from the formal lectures although you probably would from the research part (especially as an experienced practitioner who could relate it to working experience). Of course if it's just the letters you want go for it.

Posted By J Knight Thanks Jack, That's an interesting point, and one I have wondered about on and off. the Masters would give me the opportunity to engage in a dissertation which would be interesting, but otherwise how much extra would I get from a Masters? John

Posted By paul cormack John I earned both. NVQs, as you suggest, are often a means to an end. Some achieve NVQ3 for MIOSH, others to continue to assess at that level. The MSc, however, is a learning route. I didn't expect to learn as much as I did but was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed the lecture sessions, the class discussions, and then the dissertation research. Also, as you've indicated, the MSc then appears with your current signature, very unlike any NVQ (even NVQ5!). I'd recommend the MSc if it was an "either/or" choice.

Posted By Steve Cartwright Hi I would do the MSc. NVQ stands for not very qualified. Before you all start shouting I have a NVQ Level 3 in Supervisory Management, D32 Trainer Assessor, IVQ one to one trainer, bit of a farce. I went down the NEBOSH route and have successfully passed Part 1 and 2. Regards S Cartwright MIOSH
