Posted By MarkSMark A few weeks ago I was reviewing the cctv coverage in one of our areas and I saw a deliberate contravention of FLT safety rules. In order to ensure this did not happen again I took disciplinary measures against the individual. I have been criticised on this forum for pushing for dismissal of employees so I took a different approach. I went and bought (out of my own pocket) a safety reference book and made the employee copy out the pages relating to FLT safety 20 times by hand. I have been watching him closely ever since and I can honestly say that he has grown into one of the most competent drivers we have, although I have seen him in a noise protection zone without ear defenders. I find this approach to discipline much more effective than dismissal, as dismissal lead to a certain degree of animosity from the staff. This way I am empowering the staff to become better workers and giving them the knowledge they need to work safely. Please can anyone recommend a book that has more than 3 pages of text on the importance of wearing hearing protection? Many Thanks Mark. PS. (a bit off topic) I hear you can earn CPD points by giving talks at seminars- how do I get to do a lecture?

Posted By Frank Hallett Hi Mark I have read your story with interest and a certain amount of admiration. I don't know what the circumstances you allude to re dismissal were; but ultimately, all employees must know that transgresseion of H&S rules could lead to dismissal - although it should be a last resort. You don't identify your post, but I feel that your employer should reimburse you for the cost of the publication - whatever that might be - as it was purchased explicitly to enhance the employers H&S culture and the employees competence. Incidentally, this was the bit that I thought most admirable; you identified the problem, actively involved the employee concerned and achieved a change in behaviour with minimal cost & outlay. Having said that, I don't doubt that there will be some HR people after you for by-passing their turf! You should have access to the range of HS[G] publications produced by the HSE. There are several that will give you good info on managing traffic on a site - probably the best is HS[G] 136 - Workplace Transport Safety; although it has little specifically on FLT use. Another excellent book is "Improving Compliance with Safety Procedures" ISBN 0717609707 also by the HSE. As for providing lectures and presentations; you could start off by getting involved with your local IOSH Branch and any local Safety Groups [these are normally affiliated to RoSPA]. Good luck Frank Hallett

Posted By Nick Higginson What a good idea! I can recommend this to clients instead of my previous advice which was to make the employee sit on a stool in a corner with a Dunce's hat on. Regards Nick

Posted By Robert S Woods We just threaten them with having to sit near the paper shredder. If the transgretion is a little more serious we make them build a model out off discarded loo roll tubes. The last resort is getting them to play conkers without gauntlets or eye protection. That sorts the bu**ers. Bob

Posted By Heather Aston Writing lines is soooooooooo out of date. Our disciplinary procedure involves chaining disobedient workers to the front gates for a few weeks and making a real example of them. I like John's idea though, perhaps we could combine the two? Heather

Posted By el nino El Nino is confused - Is it April 1st again? Little Nino in the office here is shaking in his boots, worried that if he does anything wrong he will have to copy out my CITB GE700 in total! What do you do with the people who can't read and write - get them to copy out some safety clipart? El Nino

Posted By Merv Newman Heather, we have a powered security gate that has to be open and shut by the guards for every vehicle entry/exit. If those (never more than three at a time) chained to the gate cant keep up they tend to get dragged through the puddles. Now that we have put an over-enthusiastic guard through the same course of re-education it seems to be quite effective. Please note that they all wear hi-vis vests. Wouldn't want them to get run over, would we.

Posted By Geoff Burt Hi Merv, isn't that why they voted against the Constitution - to maintain current practices? Do you work over there voluntarily?

Posted By Jeff Watt I think it was Francis Bacon who said "In works of genius we see our own rejected ideas". I don't care that this was a p**s take, I'm buying a blackboard for the warehouse. The FLT accelerator pedal is an analogue device The FLT accelerator pedal is an analogue device The FLT accelerator pedal is an analogue device.......

Posted By DavidHaddon This is just typical of the outdated ideas and methods used in British H&S that brings scorn on all from the general public so they treat us like idiots. Everybody knows they use dry-wipe boards these days!
