Under the old EH40 (2002) Cresol had an exposure limit of 6 ppm. Under the wonderful new EH40 / 2005 there is no WEL for it. I have looked at the HSE website; I have spoken to the HSE Infoline; they have not answered my query of "why was the OES removed". Does anyone know?

Good morning Gary
You will find the answers to your question if you go to the HSE web-site and look for CoSHH &/or EH40.
There is a comprehensive set of info that answers more than you have asked.

I have already looked at the HSE website, searched it & can't find specifics re Cresols. Please send me the link which specifies this precise information (I think that only general waffle about withdrawn OES's is there).
Thanks.

Dear Gary
Quote from the HSE webpage 'The OESs for around 100 substances will be deleted as the substances are now banned, scarcely used or there is evidence to suggest adverse health effects close to the old limit value. '
If I were using cresol I would work to the old OES as a minimum.

The OES or WEL is a level of exposure which is believed to be safe - one which the human body can tolerate without ill effect. As research and knowledge progresses, evidence may be found of people who HAVE been affected by exposures near to or lower than the OES/WEL, so the figures are periodically revised. In some cases the OES/WEL may be withdrawn altogether, meaning there is no exposure level now considered safe, or that it has not been possible to determine one. In these cases, exposure must be reduced to the lowest level practicable and eliminated if at all possible
