How something like a Submarine which most of the time is not covered by normal H&S is probably the best mental picture to remeber everything involved in H&S.
Me and a freind just debating possible training and revision aids for a package and I have come up with this.
He has thrown lots at me but I seem to always to be able to relate to a submarine.
Help me out folks as I am getting too cocky now :) Where am I going to get unstuck?
What H&S issues could not be tied to a submarine
Remember it is only a revision aid as a mental picture
I am struggling with lead but I throw that in with coshh anyway so it does not count.
Maybe some ex forces can shed more light

Thanks guys
Paul
With relation to the crane and man in basket
I kinda blend that with loading of torpedoes or the resurfacing of the sonar coat whilst in refit.
As for the parachutes
You won
The sub is sunk for the "everything" issues but still holds true on many other more common things.
Now I have to come up with subs in scenarios.
Damn Thanks a lot :( :(
Big content smile on freinds face now.

Ah ha
Got you Andy
Subs have to limit communications so phones are covered in a obscure way.
Speed limits
think of silent running matey
Jason now looks at freind with big smile on his face
Inflated tyres = pressure is critical in subs

Jason,
Don’t give up on the parachutes yet. Remember Dr Strangelove. Major Kong sitting astride a missile sounds to me like a parachute would have been a useful aid (at least until the bomb went off).

Jason, you are reminding me of Baldrick, except for him, the world revolved around turnips, not submarines.
I'm sure that had health & safety and submarines existed then, Baldrick would be you.
You've really annoyed me now 'cos I can't stop rattling trough the various regs trying to catch you out!
Love from Blackadder (reaching for principles of health and safety).

I actually remembered that a helicopter can land on a modern submarine (Annika Rice treasure hunt)
So no the parachutes are now included as a access and egress issue.
Friend now gone out of room so have nobody to gloat at.

It's been staring me in the face - work at heights.
Oh no - there's a fixed ladder in the hole you come in through - I suppose you count that.
Leptospirosis - not a reg in itself but unless you are taking a supply of rats up the torpedo shutes, this should do.
I've really got you now!!!!!!!!!
SUN BURN!!!! INSECT BITES!!! WILD ANIMALS (the octopus on Captain Nemo doesn't count - it's not real)
Ha.

Hmmm :)
No it is all covered
sunburn = watch crew when on surface = cold heat wet and dry.
animals = diving seagulls, whales, dolphins lol
insects = you have never seen Das boot. This is a WW2 sub film which involved crew being treated for crabs/lice excuse my french.
Heights = yes this can be a big issue with the conning tower. Have you seen the size of the things.
Cum on
Got to do better than that :)
I actually think it would be a great aid for certificate level if drawn as a mind map or input - output. It helps me, but that is because I can relate to subs.

Aha - avoidance of underground and overhead cables (and other utilities), ie - safe digging practices.

Jason - the gauntlet is thrown down:
NEW
ROADS
AND
STREETWORKS
ACT
eg - signing, lighting and guarding.
Absolutely no way can even you with your fertile imagination fit traffic lights etc to submarines!!!!!
Me thinks I win.
Ze thread is dead!!!!!!!! You will have to try harder with your "one example fits all!!!"

No No NO you got me
wait wait
What about underwater maps that help subs avoid pipelines and oil rigs.
As for the overhead hmmm
Well as a helicopter is a threat to a sub from above i.e dipping sonars.
Only counter measure = ecm
With that evidence I guess they have it covered.
Na na de na na :)

No again it is covered
Maps = roads
High frequency sonar = lighting

But Jason, NRSWA includes reinstatement - do you have a bituminous surface (tarmac) in your sub? I think not. Do you have a modular surface (slabs or paviors)? I think not. Can your sub back fill? I think not - it is not a giant spade. Does your sub have an area around it coned off (don't you dare suggest buoys). Can your sub compress the earth like a vibro tamper (aka Whacker)? Me thinks not.
Tis but a large sausage shaped tin can and it don't impress me much.

PS I do not mean to offend, I'm only jealous because I didn't think of it first.
I'm sure it is a lovely submarine and not at all like a sausage shaped tin can. Is it yellow and full of sailors wearing creamy jumpers and white flares?
Do subs have golden rivets? (if yes then this could cover some harassment regs)

Notification of Cooling Towers and Evaporative Condensers Regulations 1992
Railways Regulations 1992
Far easier to find those that can be applied, I agree :-)

Sunk
Oh well at least it killed an hour and I got to know of 2 new pieces of legislation.
Had a giggle though thanks. . I now concede.
Just had to take time out from this bloody performance indicator stuff. Let of some steam.
By the way Merv are you based in Australia. I say this because the most useful document I am reading comes from there.

Mark, Jason will work out a way his sub can trundle along railway tracks, just give him time!
If I'm ever in trouble I'm going to contact him - if the rules don't fit, he'll bend em till they do!!!!!

"Quote" if the rules don't fit, he'll bend em till they do!!!!! "Quote"
Only under the acceptable guidelines and under the IOSH profesional conduct ;)
Love the Harrasment one and yellow submarine.
Anyway I am off now to try and find out what a sub can do when it bottoms out aka lies on sea floor.
Your knackered if I find or think of a similar situation.
Wheres my potatoe?
Now I am the unlucky type who will probably see this safety sub on the front page of a training company article or at the next IOSH seminar.
Maybe not
Anyway works over now and have to go back to the real world for a few hours as the other half is home.
Been fun

Got you....
The Fire Safety (Houses in Multiple Occupation) Regulations 1996
Now, whilst I fully appreciate that multiple submariners hot bunk on board the boat...
...only buildings on dry land laying within the specification of HMO's now applicable under section 150 odd of the Housing Act 2004 are included.....ergo Sub's excluded....
PS: Special forces don't 'parachute' into the sea.... they 'splash'...
