Posted By Edward H Not withstanding what the guidance says, the current legal wording requires notification if the period from the date when construction starts to the date when it is completed "will be longer than 30 days". Consequently a contractor can turn up, knock out a new window opening, go on holiday for a month, come back, spend two days fitting the new window and tidying up and legally the project would be notifiable.... HSE has been trying to make this less demanding hence the wording used in the guidance referred to in the previous responses. The draft of the proposed new CDM regs has altered the wording to "will involve more than 30 days construction work". Given the current guidance and the proposed revision I doubt whether HSE would be too bothered if you ignored the current legal fine print.
