Posted By Debbie Spowart We have just employed a Class 1 driver / flt operator at one of our depots who is Polish. He has shown us the necesaary licences so we know he is already trained in these areas As part of his initial employement he will have a driver assessment / flt assessment carried out (by our own internal trainer and all employees have this training regardless of external certificates or not). This is based on both a mutilpe choice questionnaire and practical skills test assessment. The only problem is the language barrier. He speaks very limited english and we are worried that he might not understand the questions etc given by our trainer. Any ideas please.

Posted By George Wedgwood This is big and growing problem and we have the same challenge - these guys are good but can't understand basic English language. We had to recruit from an Agency and the solution was to ensure that a supervisor was recruited with the men, few of whom spoke English. The supervisor could and he took part in all the training etc and ensured that the person understood properly in his own language and then could sign acceptance of the necessary procedures. Try an Agency to see if they could support you with the translations as required and see if they would have a few of the notices and procedures translated into their language. If this seems too much, try defending yourself from the law if something goes wrong!
