Posted By Debbie Spowart We have inherited a racking system (which is in good order) but unfortunately it does not have the Safe Working Load attached to it. I cannot complete my Risk Assessment and Safe System of Work Can anyone tell me if this can be identified in any way. It unfortunatley doesn't have a manufacturer name on it but is the heavy duty stuff for placing pallets on.

Posted By Cr8r Debbie I don't know how to work this out either. How about the company you inherited it from? If it was already in the building when you moved in, there may be a premises file with fixtures and fittings details inside, which may lead you to the manufacturer. What did they store on the racking? If they were heavy engineering and you're not, at least you can feel you are probably not in iminent danger of collapse. If they are still in business, I'd be cheeky and phone them up (speak to their safety person!), I'm sure they'll help you if they can. If you can, try to stop anyone putting anything dubious on the racking until you've got a bit further.

Posted By Lilian McCartney Hi Debbie, Try your Insurance company who may know of someone or ask a supplier of racking if they know someone who can test/check this.

Posted By Stephen Clark Debbie, i have dealt with racking for years and have come across this problem a few times. I use Teccon 0800 542 3977 their guys are top notch and alway give a very professional service. They helped me recently with some old second hand racking that was a real mixed bag of parts and came up with a SWL for me. Good luck, Steve

Posted By Gordon Thelwell Hello Debbie, I am a Racking Safety Inspector working for a company in South Yorkshire. I recognise this problem and see/hear it almost every week. The previous thread advising the supplier to supply the information is quite right, but in my experience of this 'forgotten industry' i doubt that they will supply the information if you have already made payment. Nevertheless, I have emailed you a SWL Assessment sheet to assist you in identifying the correct information required to calculate the SWL. (If at all possible please email some photographs of the racking, preferably the ground level section of the upright and the beams connections to the upright.) Then, simply fill the sheet in and fax/email it back to me. I have also included a health and safety guide/inspection template for you to use freely. In the meantime, your short term control measures should be to store the loads at ground and lower level whilst informing the MHE Drivers of the potential hazards and risks until the SWL is firmly established. This is based upon my 15 years experience as a racking inspector, NEB.DiP and construction experience (for reference in your risk assessment). If you require any further advice, please do not hesitate to contact me, or if you just wish to browse for general information, please feel welcome to visit the Rack Safety Forum here: http://www.therackgroup.com/forum/toast.asp Keep safe, Gordon Thelwell
