Morning all,
Some advice required please. My employer is in the process of fitting a new production / filling line for toxic, carcinogenic products. We have looked at all the H&S issues associated with the actual production stages and this seems to be fairly well covered. However the issue of testing the finished product is only now being considered when the new plant is nearing completion. The lab does not have a fume cupboard even though it has been requested continuously for the past 5 years. Management propose, short-term to get the new plant up and running, testing be carried out in the production room where monitoring/extraction etc. is in place. This may well be ok, however I just see this as a reason to delay spending money on a badly needed fume cupboard, particularly as we have people based in the lab all day. We do not have a lot of room in the lab and would only require a bench-top style cupboard. Can anyone suggest a supplier of such a type of fume cupboard new or used? Any further advice would be appreciated.

Carol,
Not sure where you are based but I used to run the QHSE for an R&D laboratory facility, we had 4 or so fume cupboards, which in the past had been used for hydrogen sulphide testing and dichloromethane (known carcinogen).
A-Grade Laboratory Fume Cupboards are based in Newcastle upon Tyne or Premier Airflow in Cumbernauld, Glasgow are two I am aware of and Premier we used extensively.
If you have any further queries please feel free to contact me.

Carol,
When you speak of a “Bench top” fume cupboard are you considering one which has inbuilt HEPA filters and discharges the exhaust air back into the lab? If you are there are quite a number of issues you will need to consider.
Feel free to email me if you want.

In answer to your question, by bench-top I simply mean a fume cupboard which can be sat onto the existing workbench without ripping out the cupboards etc. We would still intend to extract out through the wall.
