I am doing an assessment on slips,trips and falls etc and I am about to recommend that the carpets on the stairs (public house) is replaced as it is loose and threadbare. Do nosings have to be placed on the stairs or will well fitted carpets suffice. Any advice would be appreciated

I'd go for nosings as they will extend the life of the carpets and end up paying for themselves on this count alone.
Also my personal opionion is they would give that little extra step stability to compensate for some of the silly shoes some people wear.

Don't forget, if you install contrasting nosings, then you get points with the visually impaired people frequenting the establishment. Disability Discrimination Act.
(OO it feels like a friday today, so I'll even venture to say, even if they're not visually impaired when they arrived!!)

I'm not so convinced about nosings. I investigated an accident involving the death of a chap who died falling down stairs. He died when the back of his head hit a nozing.
ROSPA say there are about 1000 deaths on stairs each year. I wonder if anyone has looked into how many of these involve nosings as a cause. I think the ideal would be nosings that have a little 'give' or springy action - rather than solid hard plastic or aluminium strips but as far as I am aware no such thing exists?

Hi Steve
One of our premises managers had the stair carpet repaired using nosers as the carpet was becoming thread bare. Once fitted the noser itself became a trip hazard as it lay slightly above the carpet. Make sure the nosers you have fitted lie flush with the carpet. We have since had to replace the nosers with others that fit flush.
just be aware of the possible problems
