Posted By Nick Higginson Hi Can anyone provide any feedback on this? Is it worth registering? How much work are you getting from it? If there is someone from IOSH reading, what are IOSH doing to publicise the register? The fee seems excessive if all IOSH are doing is passing the details to people that ask. It seems quite a straightforward task to put the register online - why is this not done? Regards Nick

Posted By Paul Craythorne Nick, If 4 enquiries a year is indicative of the response then you would be better off investing the money in promotion of a web site. I can get more than 4 enquiries a week through this route. Regards, Paul Craythorne

Posted By Frank Hallett Evening Nick The renewal fee of £20.00 [latest IOSH invoice in front of me] seems rather a small amount to run a web-site but good return for the level of responses that I get in a year - about the same as you it would appear! However, we all have different reasons for doing things and my imperatives as a "sole trader" will be very different to to an incorporated company. Incidentally, the invoice was accompanied by a letter and form that tells me that the Consultants register is going on-line in 2006. Niether the form nor the timing are particularly exciting and I have already raised some concerns with the Technical Affairs Dept at IOSH. No response yet, but it was only this morning to be fair. Bottom line, if you don't think you get value - don't bother; if you think it has a value - do it. Same as the rest of life really; and "No I'm not defending the system nor IOSH". Frank Hallett

Posted By Richard Jones Nick, Whilst it's not for me to advise you on the value of registering, I can tell you there have been previous threads on this subject e.g. Membership Issues Forum 4 May 2005...which you might like to look at. With respect to publicising the register: we produce a glossy leaflet that is sent out with various enquiries and issued on the IOSH stand at conferences; the ‘Register’ is referred to by the IOSH enquiry line and also the HSE Infoline; it also has a relatively prominent position on the IOSH home page, with comprehensive instructions for use. You won’t be aware of this, but a letter has recently gone to all consultants on the Register, one aspect of which is to confirm and streamline their detail and to provide notification that the Register will go ‘on-line’ next year (this has been delayed slightly in order to take full advantage of the new systems currently being installed, that will greatly enhance the website). One final relevant factor relates to the HSE’s new pilot scheme “Workplace Health Direct”, a 2-year, £20m project aiming to deliver occupational safety, health and return to work information and advice to small firms. This will include three levels of service delivery and at level three, a lists of approved service providers delivering ‘paid for’ services. We intend to offer the IOSH Register of Health and Safety Consultants, as one of the tools available for identifying appropriate service providers. I hope this information helps to clarify things for you and helps you make your decision… Regards, Richard Jones IOSH Director of Technical Affairs
