Posted By Smiff As specialist subcontractor in construction, we have been allocated 8 safety inductions on one particular site, any more and we will have to pay £30 each for them. Surely you cannot make someone pay for safety information, it's an employer's duty?

Posted By stephencarey No i would not think it is possible to charge for safety inductions. I would see this as a way of insuring that a stable workforce is maintained rather than lots of different people arriving on site daily. This does incur a lot of work and does add to safety issues as the less people are on site the less they are aware of site issues. On a personal note it annoys me greatly that contractors keep sending different personell and that inductions and other instructions have to be repeated constantly, when a stable workforce is maintained a relationship can be built up.

Posted By Lumpy Review your contract ... are charges mentioned in it, does it stipulate they must be done by the prime contractor etc ? If not simply ask him to provide the relevant info (as he is obliged to) and do the inductions yourself. If it states such procedures in the contract ....... your stuffed !!!! Lumpy

Posted By Frank Hallett You're absolutely correct - it is the employers duty to provide such information to their Employees - nil charge to employees [HSWA S9]. As a sub-contractor, your duty is to provide to your employees - nil charge to employees [HSWA S9]. The Principal [or managing] Contractor has a duty to ensure that relevant information is passed to others who need it and is contractually entitled to pass on charges for doing so - and providing any training where that is determined as necessary for the safe conduct of the site. As Lumpy says - you must go back to your contract to find out exactly what you signed up to. Frank Hallett
