Posted By Alan Barthrope Is anybody aware of any gudance for earthing scaffold/hoist structures? Scaffolds/hoists often stand on timber sole boards and may not have direct contact with the ground however they often touch the structure which may provide an earth route to the ground. The electrical part of the hoists sytems are earthed. When should you start to think about earthing either of these structures. Should it be specified in all cases. Any reference to guidance documents and/or a clarification of the general principles would be appreciated.

Posted By ken mosley Alan, The guidance most appropriate for earthing scaffolds is NASC guidance note SG3:93. I'm not certain that this is the latest version. It's titled "Earthing of temporary scaffolding and similar metallic structures", and the information is extracted from BS7430:1991. There could well be more up to date info than this, I would suggest you should speak to a scaffolding contractor who is a NASC member. Regards Ken
