Does anyone have advice on safety and passenger ferries. We have had an enquiry with regards to a safety statement and risk assessment for the above.
We are not experts in this and therefore any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Hi Deirdre,
This is a big question; what's the context (not that I am an expert on this subject)?

I would advise contacting an organisation such as Mersey Ferries, they have been operating their ferries for many years now and should be experts in this field.

As with J Knight's reply. Can you enlarge on this? Are you talking about this from a point of view as a paying passenger or on behalf of the Ferry company?

Rob's absolutely spot on, your original question would need a number of books writing to cover all angles. We have people here who could help, but we do need to know exactly what it is you're getting at as 'passenger ferry safety' could cover anything from design and construction, to not leaving port before closing the doors, to keeping away from the deck rails after too many tequilas. Not to mention leaving the truck in gear and so on,
John

Apologies for not expanding on the query for passenger ferries. The client is the passenger ferry company itself which are looking for a safety statement & risk assessment for the ferry. It is a small ferry which does not carry cargo or anything else. So treating it as a normal workplace to carry out the normal risk assessment for fire, evacuation etc we want to know is there any special legislation which is applicable to ferries?
Thanks

I really think you need to contact the Maritime & Coastguard Agency www.mcga.gov.uk as they are the enforcement agency for ships.

This really is too big a topic to advise one of your clients second hand via a forum such as this. I am not sure on the jurisdiction of the company/vessel concerned
We may however be in a position to help if you contact me direct via email.

The MCA and the authority for the waterway(s) in question (eg port authority) would be the people to check with - although RoSPA's water safety officer may also be of some help.

Bob seems to be fishing for work and the original post appears to come from aconsultancy that should know beeter than to provide consultancy in an area they are not competent to do so.

Reference Richards response. They might even be experts on the water as well as in the field.
