Posted By Clare Wilkinson If there anyone who can give me some guidelines on the above within the financial industry. I work for a bank as a H&S Advisor . I am Workstation assessor, Trainer(Qualified),and all other things that go with our job. Last year i took on Disability issues with staff and customer. I need to benchmark my job to that within the industry as i am in dispute regarding my grade and salary within my own organisation. It would be helpful to have some views and opinions of others in a similar field.

Posted By Lumpy In short you are only worth what someone is willing to pay you. If you think you are worth more then you may have to change jobs. It is impossible to suggest a payscale as this will depend on your responsibilities, size of team you manage (if at all), where you report, where you are based (London vs Wales), etc etc. I've been in H&S 17 years, RSP, postgrad etc etc, and in the last five years I've gone from £24k to £44k ... but in order to do this I've had to change jobs twice.

Posted By Charley Farley-Trelawney Clare I must entirely agree with Lumpy on this one, you are at the end of the day worth what they are prepared to budget for the position, usually it's not enough; having so said, again with Lumpy on his latter comment, its worth looking around unless you are really happy where you are. I suppose a 25k position is always going to more on the common side than the 44k, again it’s worth shopping round. If it were up to me to advise the company on a pay grade (which I have done frequently) I may be around the 35 - 40 k range, that is a 'pie in the sky' guess without the appropriate information to be accurate. If you feel you might want to contact me directly with a job description, qualifications etc I would be delighted to give you my 'best shot' figure, it will only be an opinion based on 25 years experience in the game, (loops I sound like David Dickinson now!) Posted By anon1234 Not sure how Charles arrived at his figures from the description given - sounds more like a £25k max job to me. But clearly more information is required to arrive at a sensible figure. Agree though that the right salary is the one that someone is willing to accept. And until employers are taught about the need for competent advice and what that means - and this gets enforced by the HSE / EHOs - then we will always have people in the profession who are not competent and are willing to undercut the real rate for competent advice. Based on that and because the job is in a low risk industry, I suspect that there will be plenty of chancers willing to take on the role at much low salaries as it will still be more than they would earn stacking shelves in the local supermarket. I think it isa bout time the likes of IOSH make attaining membership much more difficult and start spreading the message about competence. Perhaps then we will get realistic salaries across the board for competent professional health and safety advisers because the workplace at large will be better informed and receive the appropriate enforcement from the HSE etc if they fail to have adequate competent advice
