Our company is carrying out some refurbishment work within an hospital department.( soft strip, removal of ductings/ventilation systems etc)Some of the contractors have raised concerns regarding coming into contact with MRSA has anyone else had any dealings with this and is there a real risk of infection ?

This leaflet from the health protection agency may alay any fears:
http://www.hpa.org.uk/in...taphylo/mrsa_leaflet.htm
or the association of medical microbiologists:
http://www.amm.co.uk/new...s/factsabout/fa_mrsa.htm
as they state MRSA does not harm healthy people.
MRSA has been isolated in dust on hospital wards so it is more than likely you will be asked to control dust levels to reduce harm to vulnerable people.
If in any doubt you can always ask to speak to the Trusts infection control nurse.
hope this helps

Been there, got that and the t-shirt.
Basic hygiene is sufficient to protect.
Wash hands, dry hands, use alcohol rubs when entering, wash hands, dry hands after leaving.
Protect any open wounds (ie sticking plasters over any cuts) wash any cuts obtained and protect with sticking plasters.
Wash hands before eating etc.
Check how long ago the area has been used (MRSA has very short life). Take advice on wearing of disposable pinafores etc if necessary which should be removed before eating.
Wash hands etc.

Hi, as others have indicated good hygiene practice is the key. Around 50% of the population carry MRSA (mostly in nasal areas and skin). As has been said dust can spread it around so try and limit/control dust. Also remember MRSA generally attacks vulnerable sick people, particularly the elderly.
I am surprised the hospital H&S or facilities manager haven't asked to meet with you and detailed what they would expect from your workers in terms of H&S whilst on their premises especially if the work comes under CDM. Wouldn't do any harm to contact them.
